Victoria's Secret

I've been thinking a lot about Liz's question about whether or not Victoria's Secret is liberating to women or demeaning to women. I have gone back and forth about this but I have come to a conclusion and I really think that the answer is somewhere in the middle. I know this isn't much of a decision but I don't feel like there is a clear cut answer. I believe that giving women a store for themselves empowers them and gives them a sense of ownership. However, I think women shop Victoria's Secret with the thought that if they do then someone will like them for their clothes or because shopping there makes them "sexy." I think that this is the trap that most women fall into when deciding to shop at Victoria's Secret.

My own personal opinion is that I actually do not think Victoria's Secret makes many women feel good about themselves. For example, I feel that women see the Victoria's Secret models and automatically assume they can look like that. Even though many individuals who realize they can not look like that since many of the models are not entirely real. However, there are still women out there who strive to look like them and will go through destructive measures to do it such as eating disorders. Overall, I feel Victoria's Secret makes many women feel bad about themselves.

I understand how hard it is to decided whether Victoria's Secret is demeaning or empowering to women. I mean, you could argue that Victoria's Secret allows women the freedom to express themselves sexually. However, Victoria's Secret can also make women feel horrible about themselves, thinking that are inadequate because they do not look like the models. This makes women strive for an unrealistic goal of perfection. So I guess I cannot completely decide on whether Victoria's Secret is demeaning or empowering to women. Maybe Victoria's Secret could just start using more women of all shapes and sizes as models, then I am sure we could agree that it is empowering.

in all honesty, i only buy victoria's secret when i can afford it...you know, the panties 5 for $25 and when the bras are on sale. they don't make me feel any sexier. what makes me feel sexy is how i carry myself.
