I can’t really say that I’m a huge Beyonce fan, but I heard one of her new songs on the radio the other day and ended up liking it. It was kind of weird and interesting to hear a popular song discussing gender roles.
Most of you have probably already heard it, it’s called “If I were a boy”. It goes like this:
If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I’d roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I’d kick it with who I wanted
And I’d never get confronted for it
Because they’d stick up for me
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I’d be a better man
I’d listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
Cause he’s taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
If I were a boy
I would turn off my phone
Tell everyone its broken
So they think
that I was sleeping alone
I’d put myself first
And make the rules as I go
Cause I know that she’d be faithful
Waiting for me to come home (to come home)
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I’d be a better man
I’d listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted (wanted)
Cause he’s taken you for granted (granted)
And everything you had got destroyed
It’s a little too late for you to come back
Say its just a mistake
Think I forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong
But you're just a boy
You don’t understand (yea you don’t understand)
How it feels to love a girl
Someday you’ll wish you were a better man
You don’t listen to her
You don’t care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
Cause you've taken her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
But you're just a boy…
I realize the song is about some jerk guy that was cheating on her, but it still seems a little unfair peg all men as the inconsiderate cheating type. The song also makes it seem like women never cheat, which also isn't true.
Check out the video for it, it's pretty interesting. Beyonce does a sort of role reversal with her boyfriend and there's a twist ending.

I like this! I hadn't seen the video/heard the song before. I'm glad you shared it with us. It is interesting to scroll down and see what others say about the video. kayla09 says "I think that this was a great video. I liked it because it is so true. Also the guy in the video is so hot." how hilarious is her comment? I mean the last sentence of it. It doesn't seem like the two thoughts agree with one another. What do you think?
I also love this song! I was also suprised when I heard it, as I don't listen to a lot of Beyonce either. But it's very intersting, I wonder what the "If I Were a Girl" version would sound like...
Every time I turn on VH1 in the morning this song is always playing! I agree that it does peg men unfairly and women are categorized as innocent but I have mixed feelings about the video. Sometimes I like the message about perception and how to treat your significant other. But she never confronts him about what bugs her. He walks all over her in a lot of respects and she puts up with it.
What is up with that??
Coincidentally I was going to write a blog about this song and video as well! I had known the song but I feel the video is what really makes this a strong message. My favorite part is the beginning when they are saying words that should describe a relationship, and I also like the part where the roles switch back from a woman to a man and they say the same line, "why are you so jealous? its not like im sleeping with him/her". Very cool Beyonce!
